Join the UVA Volunteers Around the World medical outreach program if you are interested in running a two week mobile medical clinic in the Dominican Republic during the summer of 2019!

As a team member, you will have the opportunity to shadow medical professionals, work side-by-side with experienced doctors, perform triage, manage the pharmacy, and teach public health classes to children or teens. You will also have free time to travel in the host country, experience a new culture, and build amazing relationships!

Multiple leadership positions will also be available to volunteers.

Apply for Dermatology Clinical Asst/Scribe Position

Family Dermatology of Albemarle is presently looking to hire female students who are considering a bridge year (June 2019 - July 2020) prior to enrollment in a health professional school.

The dermatology assistant/scribe would be responsible for bringing patients back from the waiting room, taking an initial history of the medical problems to be discussed, generating prescriptions to be sent electronically, helping with surgical procedures, and providing medical education to patients regarding dermatological conditions and treatment. This individual does not need to have any prior dermatology or surgical knowledge. All knowledge/training is provided on the job. This is a paid position. 

This position would be of great benefit to an individual wanting to take a bridge year, yet simultaneously obtain outstanding hands-on experience applicable to furthering their medical career aspirations. After working with the practice for a year, the individual would be comfortable seeing live patients, taking succinct medical histories, assisting with surgical procedures, interfacing with electronic medical records, and well-versed in dermatological diseases and treatments.

Requirements for application

NIH Neuroimaging Post-Bac Fellowship Program

The Advanced MRI Section in the Intramural Research Program of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, MD is seeking postbaccalaureate fellow candidates. The fellow will assist with everything from subject scheduling to data collection and analysis for an all-night EEG-fMRI sleep study. Candidates must be willing and able to work night shifts. The start date is flexible.

• College graduates who received their bachelor's degree less than three years or master's degree less than six months prior to the date that they begin the program or students who have been accepted into graduate or professional school and have written permission to pursue one year of biomedical research at the NIH.
• U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

• Candidates must be willing and able to work night shifts.

UVA Medical Scribe Program

The UVA Emergency Department's Fall application cycle for Medical Scribes is now open!

Medical Scribes are hired as hourly employees through the University’s student employment options and temp services through the University HR system. Additionally, opportunities are available to be employed through full-time benefited positions through the University and through the University Physicians Group. The full time positions support the Emergency Medicine Research Office, Emergency Department, and other clinics and divisions across the medical center.

Students are extensively trained in both the classroom and the clinical environment in order to document history, physical exam, assessments, procedure notes, and other results and dictations provided by the clinician at the time of service. In addition, scribes track laboratory and radiology results and ensure the completion and signature of charts. Medical scribes provide services and support to the clinician that increase the provider’s availability to the patients and community as well as improving timely process of accurate and complete medical charts. The program provides the opportunity for students to gain significant clinical knowledge and experience while contributing to the patient care. Through close interaction with the physicians, scribes gain great exposure to patient care and medical practice procedures.

Requirements for application

Applicants should have strong academic records and a willingness to commit a minimum of 2 years, inclusive of training, for undergraduates with exceptions, potentially, for late third year students and higher. While the time commitment is flexible around academic schedules and requirements, part-time undergraduate scribes are required to commit to working 12-20 hours during the academic year and 30-40 hours during their first summer after being hired.

UVA Neurology Research Opportunity

A team of University of Virginia medical students, neurology residents, and faculty in neurology and biomedical engineering are working on a project aimed to develop algorithms to automate detection of neurologic deficits in patients with stroke. They have a multiple positions available for students interested in helping with various aspects of clinical research.

Clinical Research Assistant

This is a volunteer position that allows you to work directly with patients. As a clinical research assistant, you will be primarily responsible for data collection from patients and controls. Training will be provided on various aspects of clinical work such as interviewing and performing screens. Opportunities to work towards publications / grant writing are also possible. Several positions available. Time commitment can vary but students will be expected to commit at least 4-6 hours per week.

Research Coordinator

As a research coordinator you will help manage the daily operations of a large scale research project, participate in data collection/processing, grant writing, and have the opportunity to work towards publications. This is a paid position with a minimum requirement of 15 hours per work. The ideal candidate is a recent graduate doing a bridge year or undergraduate student taking classes "part-time". They are seeking at least a 6-month commitment (longer if desired) and availability primarily Monday-Friday, 8 AM - 5 PM with a flexible schedule to accommodate classes or other commitments.

Mini-Medical School

Mini-Medical School is a program offered by the University of Virginia School of Medicine that brings an abridged version of medical school to participating community members.

During the 7-week program, enthusiastic UVA faculty members, with assistance from current medical students, will lead the group in exploration of a wide range of topics in medical education. Participants will experience such integral parts of medical school as match day, research labs, patient interviews, and more. Mini-Medical School will provide a behind the scenes look at the training of those we entrust with our health, a greater sense of health literacy, and forge new connections between the health system and the community. Mini-Medical School will also feature entertainment provided by UVA School of Medicine's talented medical students.

There is no cost to participate and while participants will not leave Mini-Medical School with a medical degree they will leave with knowledge, resources, and a certificate of attendance.

Pre-Medical Hospice Volunteer Program - 2018 Application Open

The Pre-Med Hospice Volunteer Program connects undergraduate students with patients receiving palliative care through Hospice (an organization that helps patients achieve the highest quality of care at the end of their lives) with Hospice volunteer training, regular patient visitation, and on-going support, this program offers a unique opportunity to meet directly with patients and cultivate your identity as a caregiver.

The Pre-Medical Hospice Volunteer Program includes the following components:

• 16 hours of training as a Hospice volunteer
• Weekly or bi-weekly patient visits
• A community of support shaped by Resource and Reflection meetings and online resources
• A year-end reflection essay
• A Certificate of Completion for inclusion in your medical school applications

This integrated and holistic program funded by the Athena Institute for Women’s Wellness is a collaborative effort between Ardmore Presbyterian Church and Holisticare Hospice. Due to the demanding nature of this experience, the emotional complexity of Hospice, and spiritual issues raised by death – your learning cohort will be moderated by a Chaplain.

Note: This program is open to all 2^nd, 3^rd, and 4^th year students regardless of religious belief, race, creed, or national origin.

How can you impact our state? The Health Wagon

The Health Wagon is a nonprofit organization providing mobile health services to the medically underserved in Southwest Virginia since 1980. 

Mission

The Health Wagon seeks to provide compassionate, quality health care to the medically underserved people in the Mountains of Appalachia. Their values include collaboration, community outreach, empowerment, inclusiveness, and spirituality. 

The Health Wagon Story

The average patient is 38 years old. 98% of patients are uninsured. 70% of them come from an income of less than $20,000 annually, despite working multiple jobs. This means they make too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough to afford private insurance. Patients live in desperately poverty-stricken rural Appalachia, where they can't afford to go to the doctor but can't afford not to. The mobility of the Health Wagon clinic means staff are able to fill the gap, whether they are inline at the food bank or at their job, the Health Wagon takes healthcare to them.

Cville Community Health Fair - Volunteers Needed on 7/28

The Virginia Wellness Initiative is recruiting volunteers for a community health fair at the African American Cultural Arts Festival on Saturday, July 28th at Booker T Washington Park. 

Volunteers are needed to help for different shift times between 10 AM - 2PM to include set up and clean up. This effort will involve offering several screenings (BMI, HbA1c, blood pressure, kidney, mental heal, and more) and counseling. Hundreds of people attend this event, so it is a great chance to practice and learn new skills while helping people in our community.

Volunteer assignments will be based on preference, need, and training level. Volunteers must attend one of two training sessions before the event, to be held:

Apply for UVA Youth Inspire!

Youth Inspire is a pediatric volunteer group at the UVA Children's Hospital. Volunteers create health-oriented workshops for kids in the waiting rooms. They adapt games, lead arts and crafts activities, and interact with kids, all surrounding a particular theme of the week. Some examples of previous workshops are Flu Prevention, Halloween Safety, and Human Anatomy.

Youth Inspire seeks dedicated students who love working with children and want to make someone's day! Volunteer shifts occur every Friday morning (one shift from 9am - 12pm) as well as meet for one hour during the week to prep for workshops.

Requirements for application
Applicants must be 1st or 2nd year students. If selected, you must be able to attend on-grounds meetings this semester: Tuesdays, 5-6pm.

George Washington University Emergency Medicine Summer Internship

The Clinical Summer Research Internship Program at the George Washington University Department of Emergency Medicine provides students with the opportunity to participate in the Department's clinical research projects. Students are exposed to various research methods and fundamental elements of clinical medicine by spending time collecting data and enrolling eligible patients into the studies.

The program seeks outstanding undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, health sciences, clinical research, or other health-related fields. Summer research interns will work on studies that provide them with exposure to the spectrum of clinical research including data collection and entry, patient interaction, and utilization of innovative research methods employed in the Emergency Department. In addition to collecting data, summer research interns will be exposed to the process of designing research studies including issues of human subject protection, data analysis, and publication.

Program requirements

• Applicants must have completed or be in the process of completing at least 1 year of university-level education
• Currently matriculated in a college or university
• Undergraduate students, pre-medical students, post-baccalaureate students, medical students, and graduate students are welcome to apply
• Good academic standing
• Strong interest in clinical research and pursuing studies in a health-related field
