Enrichment Summer Program at Michigan State University

The Enrichment Summer Program (ESP), sponsored by the Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine, provides academic advancement and career knowledge for undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds interested in veterinary medicine. There is no fee to participate. The program is open to students interested in pursuing veterinary medicine and plan to apply to a professional program for entrance in fall of 2019. Consideration is given to residents of Michigan who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The program will take place from Sunday, June 3 through Friday, June 22, 2018.

What does the program involve?

Participants will experience a robust didactic curriculum, clinical learning opportunities, and leadership development sessions.

• Content areas including: physiology, epidemiology, histopathology, etc
• Clinical experiences include: emergency medicine, oncology, internal medicine, etc
• Leadership development includes: financial health, work-life balance, written and verbal communication, and career development.

What are the benefits of the program?

• Receive intensive preparation for professional school
• Obtain exposure to the diverse professional opportunities in veterinary medicine
• Gain field and clinical experience with multiple species of animals
• And many more

What are the expectations of the participants?

Participants are expected to commit to all assigned program components/offerings, practice professional conduct and wear professional attire at all times, and complete at least 50% of required prerequisites by June 3, 2018

Maderas Rainforest Conservancy Vet Field Training Mission

December 26th - January 4th, 2017-18

Designed for pre-veterinary students in their undergraduate studies, students will learn about veterinary medicine in a developing country. Along with local vets, the class will be helping animals in need of medical attention and offer services to horses, cattle, dogs, cats, and other animals. The course will cover basic clinical information about diagnostics and treatments including basic veterinary skills such as parasitological surveys, blood work, physical exams, and more.

Three new questions will be implemented for the upcoming 2017-18 veterinary school application:

3. Considering the breadth of society we serve as veterinarians today; what attributes do you believe are essential to be successful within the veterinary profession? Of these attributes, which do you possess and how have you demonstrated these in the past?

Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine Enrichment Summer Program

Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine Open House

Saturday, March 25

Blacksburg, VA

Features a variety of exhibits, demonstrations, seminars, and public tours of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Goal of the Open House is to showcase the college, provide information about the veterinary profession and careers in veterinary medicine, celebrate the role of animals in people's lives, and provide fun and entertainment to the community.

Free and open to the public. No registration required. Attendees are encouraged to bring a donation of dog food or toys to benefit local dog shelters.

The Veterinary Oath

Long ago, a Greek physician known as Hippocrates probably wrote what is now known as the Hippocratic Oath, an oath physicians take to abide by certain rules, ethical standards, and so forth. The original oath has since been revised for modern standards, but many of its key principles still hold. Veterinarians take a different oath, called the Veterinarian's Oath, to use their skills and knowledge for the benefit of animal health, animal welfare, public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.

The full Veterinarian's Oath, as outlined by the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association), was adopted in 1954. It has since undergone several revisions and currently reads as follows:

Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine, I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.
I will practice my profession conscientiously, with dignity, and in keeping with the principles of veterinary medical ethics.  I accept as a lifelong obligation the continual improvement of my professional knowledge and competence.
