Medical Scribe - Dermatology PLC

Dermatology PLC in Charlottesville, VA is looking for medical scribes. This is a paid opportunity for aspiring health professional students to work side-by-side with physicians with the opportunity to observe both medical and surgical dermatology first hand. 

Responsibilities include inputting patient history, exam, and assessment information into the electronic medical record system during office visits. All training is provided on the job. 

The ideal candidate:

• is enthusiastic and quick to learn

• is punctual and responsible

• has impeccable written communication and typing skills

• can dedicate at least 10 hours per week (no weekends or holidays) during school year and school breaks

• will plan to stay with the position at least 1 year (greater is preferred and retention will be rewarded)

All 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year undergraduate students with an interest in a health professional career are encouraged to apply.

Mini-Medical School

Mini-Medical School is a program offered by the University of Virginia School of Medicine that brings an abridged version of medical school to participating community members.

During the 7-week program, enthusiastic UVA faculty members, with assistance from current medical students, will lead the group in exploration of a wide range of topics in medical education. Participants will experience such integral parts of medical school as match day, research labs, patient interviews, and more. Mini-Medical School will provide a behind the scenes look at the training of those we entrust with our health, a greater sense of health literacy, and forge new connections between the health system and the community. Mini-Medical School will also feature entertainment provided by UVA School of Medicine's talented medical students.

There is no cost to participate and while participants will not leave Mini-Medical School with a medical degree they will leave with knowledge, resources, and a certificate of attendance.

"Last month, DO physicians received international recognition as fully licensed physicians from the International Labor Organization, an agency of the United Nations. This will help osteopathic physicians gain practice rights throughout the world.

Within the international standards that classify jobs to promote international comparability across occupations, U.S.-trained DOs are now categorized with all other physicians as medical doctors. This recognition is expected to make it easier for DOs to gain practice rights in different countries, and will assist the American Osteopathic Association in executing its strategic priority to expand the international impact of osteopathic medicine."

2018 National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program - 5/10 deadline

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) awards funds to health profession students pursuing careers as primary care providers in exchange for their commitment to serve in high-need underserved communities. Scholarship support includes tax-free payment of tuition, required fees, other reasonable educational costs, and a taxable monthly living stipend.

After completion of graduation / training, recipients fulfill their service commitment at one of more than 16,000 NHSC-approved sites throughout the nation and its territories. Each scholar serves for a minimum of 2 years and receives one year of financial support (up to four years) for each year of service at an NHSC site.

Eligiblity
All applicants must:

• Must be a U.S. Citizen (either U.S. born or naturalized) or U.S. National
• Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full-time student
• Be attending or accepted to attend an accredited school (Medicine - DO / MD, Dentistry, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse - Midwife, Physician Assistant)
• Be located in a state, the District of Columbia, or a U.S. territory
• Be eligible for federal employment
• Not have an existing service obligation
• Submit a complete application

Jeffrey Elias, MD, the 2018 Edlich-Henderson Innovator of the Year, and award given to University faculty members whose research is making a major impact on society. Dr. Elias is recognized for pioneering the use of focused ultrasound to treat essential tremor, and for leading the clinical trial that resulted in Food and Drug Administration approval of the approach to treat the condition.
