UVA Scribe Program: Spring 2014 Application Information

Scribes are hired as hourly employees and assist the Emergency Department physicians by documenting the entire medical record.  The responsibilities of Scribes include, but are not limited to, documenting the history of present illness, review of systems, physical exam, and procedure notes.  In addition, Scribes track laboratory and radiology results. These responsibilities are part of a coordinated effort between the Scribe and the resident physician to ensure complete and accurate documentation. Scribes are typically present for every patient interview and transcribe the elements of the chart as they take place.  Scribes are extensively trained both in the classroom and in the Emergency Department in order to become an integral part of the medical team. With efficient communication between the Scribe and the resident physician, a Scribe allows the physician to focus more on patient care and analysis of diagnostic results rather than the documentation necessary for each patient. Effectively, this increases the patient flow and overall experience for both the patient and the physician.

The program provides the opportunity for pre-medical students to gain significant clinical knowledge and experience while contributing to patient care in the ED.  Through close interaction with the ED physicians, Scribes gain great exposure to patient care and Emergency Medicine.
To obtain and submit an application, please register and login on January 17th to the UCS CAVlink website (https://virginia-csm.symplicity.com/students/). You can search for our job posting with the keyword: “Scribe” There you will be able to submit your resume, unofficial transcript, and Scribe Application. The deadline to submit your application is Friday, February 7, 2014. Please email us (uvascribe@gmail.com) with any problems or questions regarding the application process or the Scribe Program.
In order for your application to be considered, you will be required to attend one of our MANDATORY Information Sessions. **Info Session Dates Tentative Awaiting Registrars approval. Please check www.uvascribe.com for any updates.**

Arc of the Piedmont Volunteer Opportunities through Madison House

The following is a message from Inna De Leon, Program Director for the Arc of the Piedmont.

“The Recreational Therapy Department of  Madison House is currently looking for volunteers at their Arc of the Piedmont site for the Spring semester. Anyone is welcome to apply! Students who are interested in health care careers such as rehabilitation therapy, specially physical and occupational therapy, medicine, and nursing are highly encouraged. Medical schools and health care career programs certainly regard recreational therapy as a respected and unique volunteer and clinical experience!

Volunteers at the ARC experience one-on-one, direct patient contact and develop meaningful relationship with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities through conversations and participation in recreational activities. This is also a great opportunity to explore the Charlottesville community! Arc of the Piedmont is located near the Downtown Mall and accessible by the CAT Bus 7 and Downtown trolley. Volunteering only requires one hour per week.

One hour of your time can definitely create a huge difference in the lives of the people we support at the Arc of the Piedmont. I, myself, have gotten so much out of volunteering with the ARC in the last three years, and had an awesome experience working with wonderful people!

Please don't hesitate to contact me for more information, and feel free to check out Arc of the Piedmont on their own website or through Madison House.

VEMA Scribe Program

The following is a message from the VEMA Scribe Program.

“Virginia Emergency Medical Associates is recruiting applicants to join our highly competitive scribe program in Northern Virginia, where we are affiliated with two emergency departments: 1) Inova Fair Oaks Hospital in Fairfax, and 2) Fauquier Hospital in Warrenton. We are seeking motivated and hardworking individuals who are eager to work as medical scribes. Our scribes gain significant first-hand exposure to patient care in a fast-paced emergency room setting. If you would like more information about our program and our requirements, please visit our website: http://www.vemascribes.com/
This is a full-time, paid position for individuals seeking admission to medical, PA, or nursing schools. If you are graduating in May 2014 (or have previously graduated) and are able to commit one continuous year to the program, we invite you to apply. We also offer part-time positions as well, which require a continuous 18-month commitment. Applications for the 2014-2015 cycle are now available on our website.

The role of the scribe:

  • Recording patient histories in an electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Transcribing details of the physical exam and patient orders in the EMR
  • Documenting procedures performed by the physician
  • Continuously monitoring laboratory tests, imaging studies, patient progress, and other evaluation studies
  • Recording physician dictated diagnoses, prescriptions, and instructions
Our scribes accompany ER physicians to the bedside for the evaluation and treatment of all patients. Scribes observe medical resuscitation for cases of cardiac and respiratory arrest as well as other emergency procedures including central lines, lumbar punctures, conscious sedations, and chest tube placements.

Our program offers the advantage of working with a small group of physicians. VEMA scribes build close relationships with our physicians who offer mentorship, teaching, and insights into a career in medicine. Our physicians are open to conducting mock interviews to help scribes prepare for admissions season. As a VEMA scribe, you will be able to strengthen your application with letters of recommendation from physicians who know you personally and have worked with you extensively.

Thank you for your interest in our program.
