Preferred Deadline Approaching For The 2013 Betty Ford Summer Institute For Medical Students
This is a reminder that the preferred deadline to apply for the 2013 Betty Ford Summer Institute for Medical Students is this Friday, February 1, 2013. The final deadline to apply is March 1, 2013.
We are very excited that we will again be offering 112 full scholarships to attend our 5-day intensive immersion program, the Summer Institute for Medical Students (SIMS).
The scholarship will include airfare up to $500, a hotel room for 7 nights at the newly renovated Holiday Inn Express in Palm Desert, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience of an insider’s view of the world-renowned Betty Ford Center.
Medical students come to the Betty Ford Center to learn about the science of addiction – they leave knowing the spirit of recovery. They learn about addiction as a bio-psycho-social-spiritual disease and about how treatment addresses the whole person. They are educated on how 12-step programs are used in treatment and become part of the lifetime recovery prescription. They immerse themselves in the treatment process and come to an understanding that the program is about moving from thinking with one’s head towards thinking with one’s heart. It’s about seeing the human being behind the disease.
On the last day of the program, medical students share insight and perspective with their peers and our staff as we reflect on the previous 5 days spent in group therapy, 12-step meetings, interactive discussions, informative and unique lectures, and the Thursday night outing to Palm Springs. There are friendships made, laughter shared, tears shed, and most importantly, insight gained into the insidious disease of addiction. Medical students come here knowing little about addiction and leave here equipped with a giant toolbox to take with them wherever their future practice may lead.
