Work with homeless children and families in Northern Virginia

Agency: Homestretch Transitional Housing Program
              Position: Youth Services Intern                                             
About Homestretch:  Homestretch is a comprehensive transitional housing agency that serves homeless families with children under age 18 in Northern Virginia. Homestretch families receive subsidized housing while working toward self-sufficiency, family stability, and permanent housing. Homestretch maintains a strong focus on homeless children, as the program's ultimate goal is to break the cycles of poverty, abuse, and low self-esteem so the children will develop into caring and productive adults, better equipped to raise the next generation.

Internship Project Areas:  Child/Youth Services

Internship Main Duties: Assist the Child Services Program, including but not limited to:  

Summer picnic and "Operation Backpack": Homestretch sponsors a summer picnic for client families, during which backpacks and school supplies are distributed to all school-age children. The intern will work with volunteers to secure supplies, stuff backpacks, and organize distribution of the backpacks and school supplies at the picnic; the intern will also organize family activities and work with volunteers at the picnic. The picnic will take place on Tuesday, July 17th  from 6:30-830PM.

Educational and social services support: The intern will help attend to the health, mental health, educational, and recreational needs of Homestretch children. Such activities include enrolling children in a wilderness sleep-away camp in rural Virginia, local day camps, recreational programs, and summer school programs.The intern will also help facilitate a back-to-school clothing drive where every child is provided with new clothing and shoes to start off the new school year! 


Commitment:   Full-time, 35 hrs/week for eight weeks between early June and early August (dates TBA)

Eligibility:  Currently enrolled undergraduate student returning to college in Fall 2012

Salary:  $2,750 (funded through the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program)
