Every year more than 500,000 babies are born premature, the leading cause of death among newborns. Health risks for surviving preemies include intellectual disabilities, cerebral palsy, vision and hearing loss, and breathing problems.
In honor of Prematurity Awareness Month, learn about the epidemic of prematurity and the necessity of healthy, full term pregnancies. Network with medical students and stay up-to-date on current topics in medicine—a must for medical school interviews! Speakers include:
-Dr. Robert Boyle, MD, Professor of Pediatrics and Chair of the UVA Medical Center Ethics Committee
-Emily Drake, PhD, RN, Associate Professor of Nursing and Director of the UVA Undergraduate Nursing Program
-Mary Gibson, PhD, RN, Assistant Professor of Nursing and Assistant Director of the Family, Community and Mental Health Systems at the UVA School of Nursing
-Sharon Veith, RN, BSN, Dept. of Pediatrics and Coordinator of the West Central Regional Perinatal Council
*FREE FOOD provided by Wings Over Charlottesville, Tara Thai, and Smoothie King from 6-6:30pm. Speakers and presentations start at 6:30pm, including a performance by Step It Up, Impromptu Performers, and Punjabi MD!
