Des Moines University Health Professions Advanced Summer Scholars

Des Moines University Health P.A.S.S. program provides undergraduate students with a three-week experience that prepares them to apply for graduate programs in the health professions. Of particular focus are the programs offered at Des Moines University, including Osteopathic Medicine, Podiatry, Physical Therapy, and Physician Assistant studies. 


June 6-26, 2015
FREE - program participation, meals, lodging, transportation

Applications due by February 15th with supporting materials by March 1.

Program includes: 

  • Lectures and presentations in four clinical areas
  • Hands-on experiences in state-of-the-art facilities, including simulations with life-like medical mannequins and labs to test your casting, suturing, and surgery skills
  • Opportunities to shadow doctors and other healthcare providers in the on-campus clinic
  • Mock interviews and participant presentations that prepare you for the application process
  • Guidance from student mentors and interactions with DMU faculty, students, and staff
 Enrollment is limited to 12 students. Minimum 3.0 GPA recommended. Applications include:

Camp Holiday Trails, a nonprofit residential camp for kids with special medical needs and chronic illnesses, is seeking camp counselors for June 7 – August 14, 2015. Located in Charlottesville, VA, this camp desires fun-loving role models who want to make a positive difference in the lives of children. Desired applicants are passionate and experienced in one or more of the following areas : challenge course, athletics, art, nature, archery, fun science experiments, swimming, lifeguarding, and horseback riding. Summer Clinical Research Internship - Pediatrics
Hackensack University Medical Center offers an 8-10 week research internship during the summer to 2-3 outstanding undergraduate, post baccalaureate, and first year medical students interested in gaining clinical research experience in the following areas of pediatrics:
Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics
Rheumatology
Hematology-Oncology
Endocrinology

The 2015 Summer Clinical Research Internship in Pediatrics at Hackensack University Medical Center offers pre-medical students the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor on one or more research projects related their specific sub-specialty. The primary focus of this internship is clinical research and writing. Each departmental track of the program will grant admission to 2-3 students. These students will have the unique opportunity to join a faculty member in completing an ongoing research project and/or create a new project proposal with his or her mentor's guidance. Research Interns will also gain valuable insight into the publication process, including opportunities to participate in co-authorship of research projects in peer-reviewed pediatric journals.

While participating in the program, interns will be invited and encouraged to attend pediatric grand rounds as well as other lectures of interest available through the Department of Pediatrics at the Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital. There will also be opportunities for students to shadow clinical staff members throughout the program to provide clinical exposure.

Students who are interested in science, medicine, and clinical research are encouraged to apply to the 2015 Summer Clinical Research Internship. The internship is open to undergraduates, post baccalaureate and first year medical students. The ideal applicant is a student aspiring to attend a graduate program in medicine with a strong academic record and an interest in pediatrics. 

Application Requirements and Qualifications:

AACOM Arnstein Minority Student Scholarship

AACOM Arnstein Minority Student Scholarship

The 2015 Sherry R. Arnstein Minority Student Scholarship Program is now accepting applications. The scholarship program, named after former AACOM Executive Director Sherry R. Arnstein, recognizes underrepresented minority students at AACOM's member colleges of osteopathic medicine. Each year, awards are given to one newly accepted student and one continuing student.

To be eligible, an applicant must be a member of an underrepresented minority group, including African-American; Native American (American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian); mainland Puerto Rican; or Hispanic. The applicant must also be either currently enrolled in his or her first, second or third year at an AACOM member college, or have been accepted and planning to matriculate at an AACOM member college. All applicants must be in good academic standing. Previous Arnstein Scholarship awardees are ineligible.

 Entries must be post-marked by March 30, 2015. All entries must be complete and meet all specified requirements; late or incomplete entries will not be considered. Awardees will be notified by July 21, 2015.

Consider applying for the Horseshoe Farm Fellowship. Horseshoe Farm offers an intensive community based “bridge year” service and leadership development program for top recent college graduates from around the nation. Since its launch in 2009, the pioneering program has attracted top students interested in nonprofit leadership, social entrepreneurship, and community based service leadership, particularly those interested in developing and leading new community based approaches in medicine, healthcare, and education.

Optometry Summer Enrichment Programs

Illinois College of Optometry, Focus on Your Future
July 13-17, 2015

The Illinois College of Optometry is pleased to announce our annual summer program for underrepresented minority undergraduate students. The program is a weeklong experience that will expose undergraduate students to the profession of optometry in a variety of settings. Participants will have the opportunity to meet and work with current optometry students, ICO Faculty & Staff, as well as practicing optometrists. Students will be housed at no charge in our Residential Complex. There is no cost to participate in this program. Participants are responsible for their travel expenses and/or transportation cost to and from ICO.

The Ohio State University, I-DOC
June 15-17, 2015

Improving Diversity in Optometric Careers (I-DOC) is an intensive three-day residential program that introduces participants to the profession of optometry. The purpose of I-DOC is to attract ethnically underrepresented minority undergraduate college students to careers in optometry. I-DOC provides hands-on activities in optics, ocular anatomy, and clinical optometry. Participants receive and observe eye examinations and gain a better understanding of the importance of diversity in health care. Thanks to underwriting by Vision Service Plan, there is no registration fee for the program. Also, all meals, housing, and activities are included. Airfare will be covered up to $500 for successful applicants.

The goal of Berkeley Optometry's Opto-Camp is to introduce underrepresented and first-generation pre-health science majors to Optometry as a potential future career track and to prepare them to be successful applicants to optometry school. The objective of Berkeley Optometry's Opto-Camp is to present a three-day in residence experience that will provide participants with opportunities to learn about the profession of optometry and the process of becoming an optometrist. There is a $125 program fee and a limited number of scholarships to waive the program fee per session, as demonstrated by financial need.

It offers participants the opportunity to investigate the academic study associated with the Doctor of Optometry program, as well as the profession of optometry and the many career opportunities available to optometrists.
