Pre-Med Fellowship Opportunity in India

PRE-MED FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY IN INDIA

Any undergraduate student who is interested in international community health should know about the Mabelle Arole Fellowship, awarded annually since 2002 through John Snow, Inc (JSI) Research and Training. Candidates must be admitted to medical school to be eligible. If awarded the Fellowship, s/he defers entrance to medical school for one year. Applications are due in mid-January 2015 and finalists are interviewed in late February in Washington, DC (at the candidate's expense).

The Fellow would depart the US in mid-June 2015 and returns in late spring of 2016. The Fellow, who receives $8,000 to cover all expenses, spends 10 months at the Comprehensive Rural Health Project at Jamkhed (in Maharashtra), one of the best examples of how mobilized/empowered communities can significantly improve their health/nutrition status. 2015 NIH-AMGEN Scholars Program

The NIH-Amgen program is for undergraduate students interested in PhD and combined degree programs in the sciences. Students interested in attending medical or other professional school programs should apply to the broader NIH Summer Internship Program. Students with experience with health disparities and a keen interest in learning more about the biological, environmental, social, and genetic causes of health disparities are especially encouraged to apply.
Application Process
Applicants should complete the standard NIH Summer Internship Program (SIP) application and choose NIH-Amgen Scholars Program from the drop-down menu in item 9. Applicants should discuss three important elements in the application cover letter:
  • Research interests and educational/career goals for the future
  • Understanding of, experience with, and interest in learning more about health disparities; we are interested in learning about personal, coursework-related, or community-based experiences that have increased your interest in health disparities.
  • Leadership experiences in school and in the community
The application deadline for this program is February 2nd, 2015 at 11:59 pm EST. The full application package, including reference letters, must be completed at this time for applicants to be considered for the program.

Virtual Medical Scribe Position


EyeScribes is currently looking for Virtual Medical Scribes for the Department of Orthopedics.


A virtual medical scribe will work to document patient encounters for physicians practicing in the field of orthopedics. Scribes will listen to a recorded doctor/ patient interaction and complete necessary medical documentation as necessary. Scribes will be responsible for entering pertinent medical history; physical examination, assessment and plan, findings and procedures based upon the doctor/patient interaction and enter necessary documentation into the electronic medical record.


Requirements:
  • Must be detail-oriented and strive to constantly improve knowledge and skills
  • Medical Scribe experience preferred but not required.
  • Must have mastery of English language with excellent verbal/written communication
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology is preferred but not required.
  • Computer with strong internet connection needed in a private or secure room/location.
  • Pay is productivity based and should average between $10-14/hr

The Eastern Association of Colleges and Employers Road Trip Program is now available for 2015. The Road Trips program is an opportunity for college students to learn first hand about a career field. The goal is to help students think about life after college and the career paths that are available. At each site you will network with employees, get an in depth look at how the business operates, see first hand the potential jobs that are out there.

The Summer Scholars Program is a competitive summer research internship to work with an Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) faculty member for 11 weeks on one of their current research projects. Although this program is offered by the EVMS Department of Pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters (CHKD), previous experience in Pediatrics is not required for any of our projects.

Brigham and Women's Hospital Stars Program

This program is an 8 week long program that allows students to engage in basic, clinical or translational research projects under the supervision of BWH faculty advisors.  At the end of the 8 weeks students will share their findings during a program ending research presentation day.  As well as conducting research, students will also receive professional development training, meet faculty from across the hospital and medical school, and participate in social networking events.

The BWH STARS Program will cover students’ travel costs to and from Boston, cost of housing, selected meals and activities, and a Research Trainee stipend.

New Elective Spring 2015 GNUR 5559 - Genomics and Health: Behavioral, Social, and Ethical Issues

Students would not be able to just show up on the first day of class, but would need to register now. This is a small highly interactive class capped at 25, so requires planning ahead as well as students who are truly interested. It is open to both Upper Division undergrads as well as Master’s students.

 Permission of the Instructor is required before they can register on SIS. You need to e-mail  Mary Ropka (mer2e@virginia.edu) 
now to get permission to register on SIS. Email her the following: (1) their Major and any Minors, (2) whether they are 3rd or 4th years, (3) why they are interested in taking this course, and (4) how they see it fitting into their academic program. #3 and #4 should reflect that they are familiar with the information provided in the flyer about the course.

Changes to the DAT for 2015

2015 Changes to Quantitative Reasoning Test (QRT) Specifications
In order to enhance testing of critical thinking skills, the detailed specifications of the Quantitative Reasoning Test (QRT) are being changed as follows:   


New: Data Analysis, Interpretation, and Sufficiency; and Quantitative Comparison (includes, but is not limited to, conversions; probability and statistics; geometry; and trigonometry)


2015 Changes to Biology Test Specifications
The Biology specifications will change slightly in 2015 as follows: 


New: Biomolecules - within Cell and Molecular Biology,
Relationships - within Diversity of Life, Experimental embryology will be removed from Developmental Biology.
Cladistics will be removed from Evolution, Ecology, and Behavior.

The QRT will still contain 40 questions in total. Biology will still contain 40 questions in total. These changes will be implemented during Calendar Year 2015.

Michigan Health Sciences Career Development Academy
Building a diverse workforce is an essential part of the equation in achieving health equity. The Michigan Health Sciences Career Development Academy is committed to exposing and preparing students for medical school. This program is designed for rising junior and senior undergraduates or recent graduates of any accredited college or university. In particular, MHSCDA focuses on preparing participants for the extensive process of applying and gaining admission into medical school. Summer Medical & Dental Education Program (SMDEP) Now Accepting Applications

SMDEP Application Now Open
Application opened November 1, 2014 and closes March 1, 2015
The SMDEP program offers students a variety of academic and career experiences that will support their dental and medical school career preparation.
  • Academic enrichment in the basic sciences and quantitative topics
  • Learning-Skills Development-including study skills and methods of individual and group learning
  • Clinical exposure through small-group clinical rotations and full-group clinician seminars. This is limited to 5% of program time for all the sites
  • Career development, including the exploration of the medical and dental careers, other health professions and an individualized education plan to identify other appropriate enrichment activities
  • Financial planning workshop and health policy seminars

ACC Leadership Symposium

ACC Leadership Symposium
University of Notre Dame, February 27 – March 1, 2015.
The 2015 ACC Leadership Symposium is a three-day leadership conference aimed at engaging students with peers across the Atlantic Coast Conference. The symposium centers on social issues prevalent in the 21st century and the resources available to college students to promote inclusion, human dignity and the common good within their campuses, local and global communities. The symposium will feature interactive workshop sessions, keynote presentations and a community service experience. Participants will also engage in a hands-on group project as it specifically relates to the inclusion within our various student bodies, local and global communities.
This conference is completely funded by the ACC. We will be selecting 5 student representatives to attend the conference. Applications are due November 9th by midnight and can be found here.
