Sports Medicine Volunteer Program

Sports Medicine Volunteer Program

The primary function of the University of Virginia Sports Medicine Department is to provide encompassing healthcare for our student-athletes that include prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries as well as emergency care during practice and games.
Although the University of Virginia does not offer an undergraduate degree program in athletic training, student volunteers are a very important part of the sports medicine department.
We offer volunteer positions for students who are interested in athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, or other allied health professions.

There will be an informational meeting at the end of the fall semester and at the end of the spring semester for students interested in becoming a student volunteer. Rising first year students interested in the program for the fall semester should call the athletic training room at (434)243-2423 to speak with Shelley Blakey prior to August 1st. Students that volunteer are expected to commit for the entire semester.

See the website for more information and click here to apply by Thursday, December 4th.

George Washington Hospital Summer Clinical Research Internship

GW Hospital Summer Clinical Research Internship
Deadline to apply: January 9, 2015

The Clinical Research Program offers students interested in research and medicine/public health the opportunity to complete a summer research internship in our department. The goals of the internship are to familiarize students with different study designs as well as teach students how to screen and enroll patients in studies and collect data in a busy, dynamic environment. The clinical research projects that students will be involved in will range from simple patient surveys to complex randomized controlled trials. The summer research internship consists of working clinical research shifts in the emergency department (ED) setting and attending bi-weekly research seminars by different ED faculty.

The Summer Research Internship program provides college students with the opportunity to participate in the Department's clinical research projects. Students are exposed to various research methods and fundamental elements of clinical medicine by spending time collecting data and enrolling eligible patients into the studies. We are seeking outstanding undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, health sciences, clinical research, or other health- related fields. The summer research interns will work on studies that will provide them with exposure to the spectrum of clinical research including data collection and entry, patient interaction, and utilization of innovative research methods employed in the Emergency Department. In addition to collecting data, summer research interns will be exposed to the process of designing research studies including issues of human subject protection, data analysis, and publication.

Flash Film: Remote Area Medical

Flash Film: Remote Area Medical
Co-sponsored by Nursing Students Without Borders
Thursday, October 23rd @ 7:30p.m.

Location will be sent to attendees

During the U.S. debate about healthcare reform, the media—reporters and news crews and filmmakers—failed to put a human face on what it means to not have access to healthcare. Remote Area Medical fills that gap—it is a film about people, not policy. Focusing on a single three-day clinic held in the Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, Remote Area Medical affords us an insider’s perspective on the ebb and flow of the event. It it is the extraordinary stories of the patients, desperate for medical attention, that create a lasting impression about the state of modern health care in America.
