24 Hours in Blue

Interviewing at the University of Michigan Medical School?  U of M is introducing a new interview day format this year called "24 Hours in Blue."

The experience will involve an optional dinner with current medical students and fellow applicants, overnight stay with a medical student host, interviews in two separate formats, a clinical experience "untour," and more.

Interview types include:
Short form -- A series of six, six-minute interviews with a variety of people from the medical school community. Interactive scenarios which challenge an interviewee to demonstrate how he/she works as part of a team, thinks and responds to questions about an ethical or philosophical dilemma, and interacts with a patient in a difficult situation -- all under a tight time constraint.

Long form -- Two separate 30-minute, open-file, one-on-one interviews with members of the Admissions Committee. Interview questions are tailored to information from an applicant's application file. The hope is to engage interviewees in an open, interesting conversation about his/her experiences and expand on some of those.

Candidates can find a detailed 24 Hours in Blue schedule as well as FAQs (including how to prepare for interview formats) at the following link: http://medicine.umich.edu/medschool/education/md-program/md-admissions/interview-day/schedule.

Undergraduate Student Opportunities in Academic Research Now Accepting Applications

Undergraduate Student Opportunities (USOAR) is an exciting new program that targets rising first-, second- and third-year undergraduate students who do not have previous significant experience in research and are looking to participate in paid research opportunities with faculty members within their area of interest. USOAR not only introduces students to the enriching experiences surrounding research, it also provides students with the chance to build strong relationships with faculty.

Job descriptions and application instructions for USOAR are now available on the Center for Undergraduate Excellence web site: www.virginia.edu/cue/usoar.html. USOAR will begin accepting applications today, July 7th.

Although the majority of these positions will be offered to students who are eligible for the Federal Work-Study Program, a few positions will also be offered to non-work-study students. Ideal applicants will have good time management skills, an ability to work independently as well as with supervision, and some background in and understanding of their area of interest.

The application will ask you to indicate up to three jobs that interest you. USOAR will notify you later in August as to whether you'll have the opportunity to interview for a position when you return to Grounds for fall semester.

Tips for Pre-Veterinary Applicants - Avoiding Pitfalls

After attending a recent Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) webinar, the HPA team learned of the top 5 pitfalls applicants make as they complete or prepare to complete the VMCAS application. Listen up so you can avoid them!

1. Not meeting with a pre-vet / pre-health advisor from early in the undergraduate career to
    application.

2. Not reading / following application directions and/or not seeking guidance from VMCAS
    (calls / emails).

3. Not thoroughly reviewing / understanding the requirements for each school they apply to.
4. Getting application information from un-official places (i.e. Student Doctor Network,
     Admissions Consultants).

5. Not planning ahead (coursework and/or application materials).
