AMCAS Opening Date Changed

Please see the following message from the AAMC regarding the 2014 AMCAS application cycle!

"In order to complete the quality assurance process for the AMCAS 2014 application, the application opening will be delayed by one week. The 2014 AMCAS application is now scheduled to open on May 8 at 9:30 a.m. ET.

This postponement does not affect the remainder of the AMCAS timeline. We still plan to begin accepting application submissions on June 4, and to begin transmitting application data to medical schools on June 28.

We are excited about the number of improvements you will see in the 2014 AMCAS application, and we appreciate your patience and support throughout the application process. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns about the AMCAS 2014 timeline."

CHANGES TO BIOL 2030 and HUMAN ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY

CHANGE TO BIOL 2030:  BIOL 2010 (or AP BIOL credit) is a now a prerequisite for BIOL 2030. Current students planning to take BIOL 2010 during Fall 2013, will be allowed to concurrently enroll in BIOL 2030 by instructor permission during this transition. Incoming 1st year students without AP BIOL credit, should plan on taking only BIOL 2010 their first fall semester; both BIOL 2020 and 2040 during their first spring semester, and BIOL 2030 during their second fall semester. Incoming 1st year students with AP BIOL credit can take BIOL 2030 their first semester, and BIOL 2040 their second semester.

CHANGE TO HUMAN ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY: Effective with the 2013–14 academic year, we will no longer offer the current two- semester sequence, BIOL 2060/61 and BIOL 2070/71. This sequence, which does not have have any pre-requisites, will continue to be offered through the Nursing School as NUIP 2060 and NUIP 2070. In order to accommodate at least some students currently enrolled in BIOL 2060, Dr. Connelly will offer BIOL 2070 one last time during the first summer session (5/13 – 6/8/13) at UVa, and will offer NUIP 2070 concurrently with NUIP 2060 next fall. Beginning with the fall, 2013 semester, the Biology department will offer a new 1 semester (4 credit) combined lecture + lab Human Anatomy & Physiology course, listed as BIOL 3559, which will be taught by Assoc. Prof. Mark Kopeny. BIOL 2010 and 2020 (or AP BIOL credit) are prerequisites. This enables us to consolidate the same anatomy & physiology topics and concepts that were previously spread out over the two semesters of BIOL 2060/2070, into a one-semester course that can be taught at a more advanced level as students are expected to have completed introductory biology. This course can be applied towards both the Kinesiology major and towards the Biology major. In order to accommodate non-Nursing students during this transition, students who are currently enrolled in BIOL 2060/2061, but are unable to complete BIOL 2070/2071, and who will have completed BIOL 2010 and 2020 (or have AP BIOL credit) will be given priority to enroll in BIOL 3559 next fall. We anticipate that the new Human Anatomy & Physiology course will only be offered once/academic year for the foreseeable future.

Interfolio Information

Interfolio Interfolio is a third party service not operated by the University of Virginia. Applicants are required to pay for the service and will need to select a subscription length. Letter writers do not need to pay for their accounts. If you are applying to health professions programs through a centralized application service that utilizes Interfolio to organize and submit letters of recommendation, you will be asked how long you would like to subscribe to the service. Students who intend on applying this year often ask us if they should choose a one year or a three year account. It’s really up to you which one you would like to choose, but you will have the option of extending it beyond one year if you choose to apply in a different cycle or if you need to access the letters in the future for scholarships or other types of opportunities.
Letters of Recommendation Submission As you complete and submit your secondary applications (preferably within 1-2 weeks of receipt) you’ll want to be sure that you have designated (through application service/Interfolio) that your letters of recommendation be sent to the schools to which you’ve applied. Remember – just sending your letters from Interfolio to AMCAS, for instance, doesn’t mean that they will be sent from AMCAS to the schools. This is something you need to do by following the instructions provided by the application service which for AMCAS includes checking the letters or medical school summary screen in your application and make sure the letters were added to that specific school.

AN ECOLOGY OF MIND: THE LEGACY OF GREGORY BATESON
(WITH LESSONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE)

Nora Bateson (Gregory Bateson’s daughter), independent filmmaker,
Vancouver BC

Stephen Nachmanovitch PhD (Gregory Bateson’s student), musician and writer, Charlottesville VA

One of the 20th century’s most integrative and influential thinkers and writers, Gregory Bateson (19041980) made important contributions to anthropology, biology, cognitive science, psychiatry, and cybernetics. Offered in conjunction with UVA’s Bateson Symposium later this week (11-12 April), this Medical Center Hour features Bateson’s younger daughter Nora and one of his students, musician and writer Stephen Nachmanovitch. Together, they speak to the legacy of this scientist who was steeped in poetry and art, who insisted that the practice of any art or science requires both rigor and imagination, and who probed the interconnections between human thinking and natural phenomena. What are the insights and lessons here for clinical practice and for those who engage the ill or injured person or seek to understand the processes and pathologies of body and mind?
Co-presented with the Bateson Symposium, Department of Anthropology, UVA
